What Happens to Your Body During EFT Tapping

When you tap on acupressure points during an EFT session, your body responds in ways that researchers can actually measure. It is not just a feeling of relaxation. Something specific is happening at a physiological level.

The primary mechanism appears to involve the amygdala, the brain region responsible for triggering the stress response. When you focus on a distressing thought while tapping, you are essentially sending a calming signal to this part of the brain. Studies using brain imaging have shown reduced amygdala activation after EFT sessions.

Cortisol levels also change. Research published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease found that EFT tapping reduced cortisol by an average of 24 percent in a single session. Some participants showed reductions of up to 43 percent. Cortisol is the body's primary stress hormone, and elevated levels are linked to anxiety, depression, insomnia, and weakened immune function.

Your heart rate variability may improve as well. This is a measure of the variation in time between heart beats and is considered a key indicator of stress resilience. Higher variability means your body can adapt more effectively to stress.

Some people experience physical sensations during tapping, such as warmth, tingling, or a sense of lightness. Others notice emotional shifts, like sudden clarity or relief from a burden they had been carrying. These responses are normal and indicate that the body is processing and releasing stored tension.

What makes EFT particularly interesting is that these changes happen quickly. Many people report feeling noticeably different within a single session, which is why EFT has gained attention as a fast-acting tool for emotional regulation.
